Adobe Lightroom 4.3 and Camera Raw 7.3 Final Releases Available

It's here and just before Christmas time the Adobe Lightroom 4.3 and Camera Raw 7.3 as a final releases on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Lightroom 4.

The goal of this releases is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.

Bugs Corrected in Lightroom 4.3:

The following bugs that were part the Lightroom 4 releases have been corrected. The team appreciates the very detailed feedback the community has provided on Lightroom 4 and we’re excited to correct a number of issues experienced by our customers. These issues have been FIXED:
  • Autolayout produces a Book with the correct amount of pages but without any images added. Please note that this only occurs when the filter is set to “Unused”.
  • Uploading large panorama images to Revel caused Lightroom to crash.
  • The “Unused” filter was not properly filtering images within the Book Module.
  • Lightroom hangs while changing the Exposure adjustment by typing in a numeric adjustment. Please note that this only occurs when the Enter key is not typed to confirm the adjustment and another Develop adjustment is tried. Also please note that this only occurs on Windows.
  • After creating a new folder in Lightroom, attempting to undo that folder can sometimes cause a corrupt catalog.
  • An image can be simultaneously flagged as both a Pick and Reject at the same time.
  • Using multiple colors within a single text cell within the Book Module can cause Lightroom to crash.
  • Unable to post photos to Flickr when the image filename contains an apostrophe.
  • The active Develop slider, the one controlled with + and – keys, defaults to Exposure when moving from one photo to another.
  • Catalogs from Photoshop Elements 11 would not update in Lightroom.
  • Site titles longer than 70 characters created in the Web Module can cause Lightroom to freeze.
  • Cell padding linking lost between sessions.
  • Deleting the top image in a stack causes the entire stack to disappear.
  • Tethered capture fails when turning camera off and back on. This also can occur if the camera goes to sleep and then wakes. This occurs only with Canon cameras and on Mac only.
  • Cropping an image to a small size sometimes causes the image in Develop to become blurry.
  • AVCHD video formats are not properly importing into Lightroom. Please note that this only occurred on Mac.
  • Enable Profile Corrections does not auto find iPhone 4 profile.
  • Crop doesn’t update in second monitor if navigator panel closed. Please note that this only occurred on Mac.
  • TIFF files can experience tonal shifts within Lightroom.
  • Mask overlay are displayed in filmstrip and navigator. They should only be displayed in the Develop Loupe.
  • Video files created on an iPhone 4 flickers when played in Lightroom.

Press release:
Innovative Shadow and Highlight Recovery and Enhanced Digital Photography Workflows Mark A Milestone Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 6, 2012 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the availability of Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 4 software for Mac OS and Windows. Lightroom is the essential digital photography workflow solution helping amateur and professional photographers quickly import, manage, enhance and showcase their images.
First released as a public beta in January 2012, the final version of Lightroom 4 is now available for US$149 for the full version and US$79 for the upgrade, providing an incredible value for photographers. Lightroom 4 introduces refined technology for superior shadow and highlight processing, ability to create photo books, additional local adjustment controls, and enhanced video support.
“Feedback from our customers is invaluable in developing Lightroom and the real trick to a great release is to combine these insights with Adobe’s unrivalled image processing innovation,” said Winston Hendrickson, vice president products, Creative Media Solutions, Adobe. “Lightroom 4 is a stunning new release that will enhance photography workflows and help photographs stand out from the crowd.”
New Features in Lightroom 4
Lightroom 4 is a major release, adding significant new capabilities and innovations. New adjustment controls maximize dynamic range from cameras, recovering exceptional shadow details and highlights. The software features new and improved auto adjustments to dynamically set values for exposure and contrast, and additional local adjustment controls including Noise Reduction, Moire and White Balance.
Lightroom 4 provides photographers the tools to create beautiful photo books with text controls and a variety of easy-to-use templates, as well as a direct link for photo book creation from within the new Book module. A new intuitive Map module displays images already assigned a location, provides location tagging and reverse geo-tagging controls and saved locations for easy assignment of a photographer’s common locations.
Now, native video support gives photographers the capability to play, trim and extract frames from video clips shot on DSLRs, point-and-shoot cameras and smartphones. Video-specific presets and many standard Lightroom image adjustment controls can be applied to video clips, and adjusted videos can be exported as a H.264 file or published directly to Facebook or Flickr*.
In the Develop module, presets fully utilize new processing technology and the addition of soft proofing helps photographers tune images in a destination color space to ensure content looks its best. In addition, customers can now email images directly from Lightroom using an email account of their choice.

Adobe Lightroom 4.0 Beta 1 is Out, What's Inside?

Adobe just made it again and gave us a version 4.0 to test just before the final version, due to be release around March 2012. Although this is just a beta version you can count with a bunch of new features and free to try them out.

Those of you going to accredited online colleges for photography will be glad to know this.

Pay attention that this is just a beta and some functions are not complete but you are always welcome to report to Adobe bugs and other errors you find so they can fine tune it and correct them in time for the final release.

You also have no problem installing it if you are a user of any other versions has this one will install side-by-side with your older version and will create a new Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat library on the same folder as the old on. I never too much to say DO NOT MERGE YOUR LIBRARIES the old one and the new one as you may never return back. Instead just use a new one with copies of some of you raw and movies.

I will not go in to much depth about this matter has there are a lot of good people more expert than me doing what they do best, but I will point here some new things you may not notice when you got the beta version and open it for the first time.

Some of them are pretty obvious while others... not so much.

Although it doesn't "look" much different than version 3 when you fire it up what comes to your attention is the fact that they now have 2 more tabs on the top right side Map and Book and these are 2 of the new features that you notice right up.

They have also included an option (right click on top of it with the mouse to hide/show some you want or not to be visible) just in case you want to keep it as on previous versions.

Adobe Lightroom 3.xx Modules

Adobe Lightroom 4 beta 1 Modules

On the Develop module they moved things a little bit in order for us to get more control over our images.

The WB stays the same but the Tone sliders they are now much better and improved over the last version. You had Exposure/Recovery/Fill Light/Blacks Brightness/Contrast and they tweak it to Exposure/Contrast now in another group Highlights/Shadows/Whites/Blacks.

They also changed the names so they can fit better in the new approach Adobe is creating for their Tone sliders.

All sliders in this section can now have negative values which increase the possibilities for your creative process.

Adobe Lightroom 3.xx Basic/Tone sliders

Adobe Lightroom 4 beta 1 Basic/Tone sliders

The Lens Corrections has also suffered some changes has you now have only a choose option to Remove Chromatic Aberration as opposed to a slider on the version 3.

Only time will tell if this was the right move on this matter...

Adobe Lightroom 3.xx Lens Corrections sliders

Adobe Lightroom 4 beta 1 Lens Corrections sliders

Camera Calibration is another aspect that has changed. Now that have upgraded it to version 2012 and the previous on Adobe Lightroom 3.xx was 2010.

Here you have to pay much attention as to use live raw files with this beta version has if you use the new 2012 process you will not see any changes over any of the 3.xx old version. Again take extreme caution when using live raw photos to process has a lot of colors have changed with this new process and if you use presets a lot you will also see them changing what they look like in the past versions.

Adobe Lightroom 3.xx Camera Calibration sliders

Adobe Lightroom 4 beta 1 Camera Calibration sliders

The Graduated Filter button has improved it's option sliders as on version 4 beta 1 you now have the option to control the color temperature independently has the sliders became separated from the main ones and divided into Temp and Tint just like the normal WB sliders in Lightroom.

This would make things a lot easier to use and visualize. They added another separation for Sharpness, Noise and Moiré those last two were new welcomed addictions.

On the other group of Sliders they have removed the Brightness in exchange for the newly renamed Highlights and they added anew one called Shadows.

I think the Graduated Filter tool now have improved a lot and gain a new value with this new features. Kudos for this.

Also much improved is the welcomed Brush tool. Although I find that sometimes this brush is a little bit sluggish we will see how it will respond, in time, with the new features that were added.

First the sliders were divided into 3 groups for a better visualization of each of the features they intend to be related to. Again Kudos for this feature has it will make reading things a lot more easier.
As on previous button (Graduated Filter) the WB is now possible to adjust in Temp and Tint sliders and are in a single and individual group.

They added another group with Sharpness/Noise/Moiré and also has on previous button they got to move in Highlights and Shadows and left the Brightness concept out of it.

Another requested feature people were asking about was Soft Proofing (This is the ability to simulate different types of printers and media, by loading in their profiles and then accurately displaying them on screen) so it would be easier to match your print profile with the photo showed on your screen.

This can be achieved at the Develop module at the bottom there's a tick to enable that feature menu.

And while we are still talking about printing capabilities Adobe created at the bottom of the PRINT module sliders a new possibility for you to adjust your prints in relation to your monitor (i.e. if your prints come out a little bit darker/brighter on your printer and you see them on the monitor differently) now you have 2 sliders you can tweak and you can find them at bottom of the PRINT module they are Brightness and Contrast.

If you do not have any calibration on your monitor and printer and always had problems with darker/lighter prints coming out this is a good option for adjusting your prints to match your monitor, well at least is something not seen on previous versions.

For Video lovers now is much easier to see the content of your imported videos as they now show what content they have inside just by sliding the mouse over them in the Library module.

You can also apply a certain preset to the video, change the White Balance, Tone Control like Exposure, Contrast the Whites and Blacks well it's a nice touch for a quick edit but do not expect to get the option to edit a full composite video with it or make some home movies.

Although the options to trim the video and choose the poster frame (i.e. the image that will be displayed on screen when you browse the video folder) are available you will not be able to compose and edit each part of the video... well at least in this beta version.

You can also double click the video to play it right inside Lightroom and there is also a possibility to grab a shot of a particular frame of that video as it will be saved in your library as a jpg file.

New things that they added to the modules:

MAP module

This was a feature that was much requested by many and with some of the new digital cameras coming with GPS integrated this is a PLUS for Lightroom.
Althought Aperture has this feature almost from the beginning Adobe never really cared much about this feature up until now.

So what will you get with this new module is a possibility to grab your photos and start geo tagging them even if you do not have them already with GPS coordinates.
You need to be connected to the internet to use this feature has it uses Google maps to geo tag your photos. This is a neat feature has it will embedded the GPS coordinates right into your photos, if you ever used Flickr this is something similar to the feature they have.

BOOK module

Book is another great feature that many of us were waiting for. Either for creating our own books and publish them or to manage portfolios for clients.

Book has Blurb account associated with it (and that you can download their publishing service (Here) to use on the Library module) and with all the great features that have in the market for customizations or you can simply create a pdf file to share. This is BRILLIANT!!!

This is basically the features that are in the Adobe Lightroom 4 Beta 1.

I was hopping that they will included this time the Face Detection engine as it would been very useful for the cases when you take lot of pictures in conference rooms and this could help identify and tag a lot of people with ease. Let's hope this would be an hidden feature for the final version.

Noticed that the sliders are a little bit sluggish even with only one folder with 288 raw images and 2 videos imported they do not respond quick enough when you slide them left/right quickly to see the effects change.

I've also included, at the end of this post, the full release features sent by Adobe.

Enjoy the new software free beta version and post some of your opinions here.

Map Module

It’s great that digital cameras automatically record a date/time stamp so that when it comes time find that image from New Years 2003, it’s easy to filter your image collection based on the information recorded by the camera. However, the “when” of an image is only half of the equation. What about the “where?” As an increasing number of cameras, smart phones leading the pack with compact cameras following closely behind, the “where” is also being recorded at the time of capture. Even Sony’s high-end a77 and a65 DSLR cameras have an option to automatically record the GPS coordinates of where you captured an image. But for those of us who don’t speak fluid latitude and longitude coordinates, we need a visual map interface to find the images by location. Lightroom 4 adds a dedicated map module that loads Google Maps to present your images in a clear and concise view. If your camera doesn’t automatically record the coordinates of your images you can easily drag and drop images to a location, use GPX tracklog files to link images based on date/time stamps or define saved locations that can be quickly associated with a set of images. (Not surprisingly, this link to Google Maps will only work when you are connected to the World Wide Web.) Additional Map details:
  • Tag images with a location using drag and drop or saved location assignment
  • Search for locations
  • Create Saved Locations
  • Managed privacy settings for saved locations
  • Load GPX tracklogs and auto tag images based on date/time stamps

Develop Module (Updated 2012 Process Version)

Ever wonder why there was both an Exposure control and a Brightness control in Lightroom’s Develop module? Why the Black setting defaulted to 5 and Brightness/Contrast to 50 and 25 respectively? When the Camera Raw plug-in was introduced in 2003 these concepts weren’t overwhelming for those intrepid photographers willing to switch their camera’s capture format to “RAW.” (It’s not an acronym so I have no idea why folks continue to capitalize that word…) When Lightroom and the Camera Raw plug-in started supporting JPEG and TIFF files, the visual appearance of the settings and preset behavior was never truly optimized for the additional formats. Lightroom 4 rationalizes the controls and addresses a fundamental photographic problem of balancing highlight and shadow detail. Please give the new tone controls a try on your most challenging images as well as the additional controls listed below:
  • Simplified controls in the Basic panel
    • Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks
  • Powerful, content aware, shadow and highlight controls to extract all of the dynamic range in a single capture
  • Updated Clarity adjustment for superior results without the artifacts
  • Updated Chromatic Aberration correction solution
  • New local adjustment parameters
    • Noise Reduction
    • Temperature and Tint
    • Shadows
    • Highlights
    • Moire
  • Per channel curves adjustments
  • Soft proofing
  • Paper and ink simulation
  • Choose between perceptual and relative intent
  • Intuitive virtual copy creation for profile-specific adjustments
  • Profile and Monitor gamut warnings
  • Print module brightness/contrast option to address differences between monitor and paper characteristics

Direct Email from within Lightroom

I realize that this feature has 1998 written all over it but it’s still a very common request to be able to email from directly within Lightroom.
  • Configure your desktop mail client or AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail webmail accounts to send email from Lightroom
  • Convenient size presets appropriate for email
  • Address book to store commonly used email addresses

Elegant Photo Book Creation

Photo books have grown in popularity and quality over the past few years and we’re proud to introduce a module dedicated to this workflow.
  • Flexible auto-layout tool with preset-based customization
  • Over 180 professionally designed page layouts
  • Intuitive drag and drop behaviors for reordering pages or swapping image locations
  • Helpful layout guides and page bleed information
  • Incredible flexibility through cell padding for text and photo cells
  • Dynamically located photo captions based on existing metadata or manual entry
  • Powerful type tools based on industry leading type technology found in Photoshop and Illustrator

  • Tight integration with Blurb book printing service
    • Set size, cover, paper quality directly within Lightroom
    • Price estimate dynamically provided during book creation
  • PDF Export options include size, resolution, color profile and output sharpening

Enhanced DNG options

These enhancements will be represented in the next DNG Specification update.(Version 1.4)
  • Embed Fast Load Data options dramatically improves image loading performance in the Develop module
  • Lossy compression option provides significant file savings with minimal quality impact. (Ideal for archiving outtakes or reducing the size of time lapse projects without losing the flexibility of raw)
  • Resolution reduction via export provides the ability to share lower resolution versions of the original raw file without losing the capabilities offered by raw.
  • Metadata and filter options available for DNG file types

Lightroom 4 Additional Features and JDIs

  • Publish Collections can now include rendered video publishing
  • Export to Adobe Revel functionality

  • Stacking is now possible in collections
  • Flash galleries are now color managed
  • Per module walkthrough tips

Additional Notes:

  • An important correction was made to the Lightroom credits. There’s a great tradition in the Photoshop family of listing babies born to team members during each cycle. We’ve previously omitted references to the fertility of the Lightroom team but have corrected that omission with Lightroom 4.
  • “Adobe plans to change the name of Adobe Carousel to Adobe Revel. We originally chose the name Adobe Carousel because it was descriptive of core functionality in the product, in that photographs were viewed in a circular manner, like a carousel. However, we now plan to offer additional photography solutions on this platform, including but not limited to the ‘carousel’ feature. Our rapidly expanding charter for this new platform requires a name that is less narrowly descriptive of the current product features.” – Chris Quek, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Adobe Revel

Additional Known Issues

General
  • Multiple exports of the same photo to Adobe Revel will create duplicate
  • assets within Revel
  • Import from iPhone can sometimes take a longer than expected
  • Wrong photo is displayed after round tripping between library and print.
  • If Tethered Capture Settings dialog is left open for very long periods of time, Lightroom
  • will hang when attempting to dismiss the dialog
  • Tethered capture can fail after computer wakes from sleep.
Books Module
  • Blurb books created through Lightroom are limited to 160 pages
  • Blurb only supports a subset of the languages that Adobe supports
  • Undoing one-click photo captions works sporadically and can cause
  • Lightroom to lag
  • Photos may be removed from layout pages when using the color and rating
  • filter in the Book Module on Windows only.
  • Updating metadata in Library does not automatically propagate the change
  • in metadata-based text in Book.
  • Adding captions to multiple photos at once causes Lightroom to lag.
  • Text on spine in Hard Cover books is not centered
Video
  • Black line can appear on right and bottom of videos when viewed in Loupe on Windows
  • Video frames are occasionally played out of order on certain AVCHD video files
  • There could be a memory leak when exporting over 500 videos at once
Map Module
  • Lightroom can crash if you try to assign too many 15,000+ photos to a Saved Location at the same time in Map (Mac only)
  • Having over 1,000 tagged photos in the Map Module causes a performance lag.
  • Reverse geocoding is not available in the public beta
Develop Module
  • The Auto Tone algorithm is still a work in progress. In some instances, Auto Tone in PV2010 will produce better results than Auto Tone in PV2012

Tip: Using Export Actions in Adobe Lightroom

Fellow Photographer Jared Platt shares with us in his regular podcasts lots of great useful information concerning Adobe Lightroom.

This one came into my attention as it's something you don't ear much about it and I did not want it to pass over my hands without sharing it with all of you...

In this video you can see how helpful this Export Action can be to our workflow, either to make it fast or to complement it with other applications we need to run after the images are exported from Adobe Lightroom.

Enjoy the How to Video.

Thank you Jared Platt for sharing this with all of us, also don't miss his Workshops and Lectures page.

Digital Photography Workflow: Fashion Photography

A lot of people been emailing me and asking about what is my workflow since the beginning of take a photo till the end passing through the process of working on the raw images and final presentation to clients.

Well what I can tell you is that is not as difficult as you may think and if get used to a certain workflow you will make it as fast as speed light.

I took an example from a fellow Fashion photographer that you may find very interest and very complete.

You can find his portfolio work here and his name is Patrick Lavoie.

Patrick Lavoie

With an education in photography from Cégep du Vieux-Montréal, Patrick Lavoie has put his knowledge of the image to work as Art Director and designer for BOHA design agency in Montreal for several years. His diverse background has led him toward a specialization in photo retouching, digital darkroom and fine art printing.

Take a look at the full article here.

Thank you Patrick for taking the time to put this great piece of workflow in writing.

LRB Graduated Filter Presets for Lightroom 2.0 by Sean McCormack

Today let's talk about some cool plugins for Adobe Lightroom 2.

My mate Sean McCormack is a wonderful guy and fellow photographer. In case you haven't notice Sean has been creating awesome galleries and slideshows modules for Lightroom since 2006 at Lightroom-blog.

With the introduction of Adobe Lightroom version 2 adobe has made available some tools that cause some great impressions over photographers and their workflow one of them was the Graduated Filter tool.

So Sean decided to create a very affordable set of presets with over 70 Graduated Filter (just €5.00, about $7.75) and simply called them LRB Graduated Filter Presets for Lightroom :)

Sean sent me the presets a couple of weeks but I can confess you that time and availability was against me for testing them and write this article... but now that I have test them I just want to say one thing AWESOME!!!!!

I could not leave you guys wondering where to get your Graduated Filter elsewhere except buying the Sean McCormack one's or take time to create your own, but after you buy them you can always change them to your taste and then create your own based on Sean initials.

With no more delays let's look at what he have to say about them and what you will find in the sent package.

"While I provide a lot of free tips, tutorials, and even galleries to users, sometimes I do a little that requires some return on my time.
To aid users in selecting the right look for their landscape images, I've created a set of over 70 Graduated Filter presets to get you started with making creative choices for your images. Covering both landscape and portrait orienations, as well as hard and soft line filters, these filters come in 3 standard colours: ND (Grey), Blue and Tobacco. As is also standard, they come in strengths of 1 stop (0.3), 2 stops (0.6) and 3 stops (0.9). It was a bit of work to create this, but I'm not charging a whole lot for them, just €5.00 (about $7.75). Obviously you can tweak the settings once applied. In fact I positively encourage it!

Why should you pay for these, when you could create them yourself? Well the fact that it takes a bunch of time to put them together is the best reason. Probably more than €5 of your time. Also by running down through the Presets panel on the left of Develop, you can preview them quickly to see how they look with your image. Much quicker than mucking around with sliders.

You can see some of the presets in sample form here: Download Sample Grads

To install these presets, drop the Sample Grads folder into:

User/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Develop Presets
on OS X,
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Develop Presets on XP-Note that Application Data is a hidden folder,
C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Develop Presets on Vista,
where User is your login name.
Or you can click on Preferences>Presets>Show Lightroom Presets Folders to open this folder in Finder/Explorer. Then open the Develop Presets folder from there.

The full version folder contains 4 Sub folders, place these folders in the Develop Preset location mentioned above.
You can also Right click on a preset or folder and import them from within Develop, which is fine for a small amount of presets, but for folders, manually placing them and restarting Lightroom is quicker.

The 4 folders are:
Grads: Hard-Landscape
Grads: Hard-Portrait
Grads: Soft-Landscape
Grads: Soft-Portrait

Hard Grads have a tight transition, which Soft Grads user a wider transition. Landscape and Portrait Grads need to be separate as they don't rotate. The 3 colors (ND, Blue and Tobacco) come in 1, 2, and 3 stops varieties, equivalent to 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 in standard filter terminology. Also as most Landscape photographers use the Rule of Thirds to compose, each type is set on the bottom and top third, allowing you to choose the nearest one quickly. To change the filter, click on the pin to select it (Press M to activate Grad Filter in Develop, if it's not open). Drag the pin to move the center of the grad, and the outside lines to make it softer or harder. Finally click the color chip to change the tint. The Blue and Tobacco colors I've chosen are simply ones I like. You may prefer a redder Tobacco, or different blue. Actually then ones I have look similar to the Cokin set I own, so I was trying to get close to them.

To Download, add them to the cart. Payment is Paypal via E-junkie, but can also take Credit Card. Once Paypal sends notification, an email will be sent with a download code.
Windows user that experience security issues related to downloaded Zip files should try an alternate decompressor such as 7-Zip.

Update: On the advice of Richard Earney, I've rezipped with BetterZip to remove Mac related components. Please let me know it you're still experiencing trouble after redownloading. Also rather than clicking on the link in the email, copy and paste it into your web browser. This works fine for me using XP under boot camp.

Update #2: I've found one of the presets had an incorrect value which has been fixed and the packages reloaded. Please download again. Apologies. I did check them before I posted, but somehow missed one.

Update #3: A few people commented the Portrait grads were upside down. Well, they're not.. They just shoot upside down! Seriously though you should turn the camera so you shoot with the shutter button up. It makes the camera more stable. Anyway for those that shoot upside-down, I added another 36 presets, duplicating the normal ones, but upside down. In fact they probably got more love!

A look at the sets (Click for Bigger version):

Here's roughly how they look, first the hard set, then the soft."

Please note that VAT is charged in the EU.

THANK YOU Sean for taking the time to create this beautiful presets and have them available so cheap.

Adobe Releases Lightroom 1.4.1 Final Update

It looks like Adobe as finally released the so expected 1.4.1 version with corrections.

Since the redraw of version 1.4 and also Camera Raw people were expecting some fix replacements that finally become available.

The Lightroom 1.4.1 and Camera Raw 4.4.1 updates have been posted to the following locations: Lightroom (Mac, Win), Camera Raw (Mac, Win). The updates provide all of the changes included in the original Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.1 releases but also include corrections for issues described below and in previous blog posts. The Camera Raw plug-in will also be available later this evening via the Adobe Update Manager and the Lightroom update can be located by choosing 'Check for Updates…' under the Help menu. The Lightroom and Camera Raw team apologize for any inconveniences caused by the issues presented in the initial updates

Lightroom

* Lightroom 1.4 incorrectly modified the EXIF time date field of images that had a metadata update applied. This incorrect modification does not appear in Lightroom or Bridge and is only viewable through third party EXIF tools. This error has been corrected in Lightroom 1.4.1 and all files in a Lightroom catalog that have been incorrectly modified will be corrected on their next metadata update. (Metadata can be updated by selecting the files in the Library grid view and choosing Command or CTRL + S to save and update the metadata.)
* Olympus JPEG files could render incorrectly in Lightroom 1.4, displaying an artifact in the exported file.
* Any conversion to DNG in Lightroom 1.4 (Windows Only) would cause the DNG file to become unreadable by Lightroom’s Develop Module or Camera Raw 4.4 in Photoshop. The issue has been corrected and files can be converted to DNG again in order to resolve the issue for existing files. Returning to the original native raw files is not necessary. The affected DNG files can be selected and converted again using the DNG Converter 4.4.1 available at www.adobe.com/dng/. This process is not required but recommended to ensure that a correct validation value is stored within the DNG files.
* Lightroom 1.4 provided degraded import performance relative to Lightroom 1.3.

Camera Raw

* Camera Raw 4.4 incorrectly modified the EXIF time date field of images that were saved as TIFF or JPEG files from the Camera Raw dialog. This has been corrected in Camera Raw 4.4.1
* Olympus JPEG files could render incorrectly in Camera Raw 4.4, displaying an artifact in the exported file.

Adobe Lightroom 2.0 Beta is Out!!!

Version 2 of Lightroom is now available as a public beta, (until August 31, 2008) allowing the photographic community to provide feedback on new features and workflow enhancements, so what are you waiting for?

Be sure to read the release notes for a careful understanding of what this BETA version is and what contents does it have.

Take a look at Scott Kelby Learning Center for some tips about the new Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 Beta version.

Here are some of the features this first Beta version brings:

IMPORTANT NOTES, PLEASE READ

Primary Known Issues

* Lightroom 2.0 beta will not upgrade Lightroom 1.x libraries. The beta is intended to be used for testing and feedback purposes. Lightroom 1.x and 2.0 beta libraries will be migrated to the finished version of Lightroom 2.0.
* While data loss is not expected, this is a very early ‘beta’ quality build and you should always work on duplicates of files that are securely backed up.
* Lightroom 2 beta will not overwrite or interfere with a machine that currently has Lightroom 1.3.1 installed.
* Develop settings applied in Lightroom 2.0 beta are not guaranteed to transfer correctly to the final version of 2.0. This is particularly true for localized corrections.
* The new Photoshop integration functionality is only available with Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) and should only be used for testing purposes. Metadata associated with the original file may not carry over to the subsequent file saved from Photoshop
* Additional known issues are listed in the release notes.

New Features
Library

* Streamlined Library Layout
* Smart Collections
* Powerful Filter Bar to search and refine images
* Suggested Keywords for simplified keywording
* 10k pixel size limit raised to 30k pixels

Print Module

* Picture Package for multi-page layouts
* Print Module output directly to JPEG
* Enhanced Print Sharpening based on PhotoKit Sharpener algorithms
* 16-bit Printing for Mac OS X 10.5

Additional Resource Links

* Lightroom video tutorials by Julieanne Kost: Lightroom 2 beta Tutorial Part I and Lightroom 2 beta Tutorial Part III. (Part II is on the way)
* Lightroom 2 beta preview by Ian Lyons
* Lightroom 2 beta review by Uwe Steinmueller at OutbackPhoto.com.
* Lightroom 2 beta review for our French-speaking photographers
* Photoshop Cafe provides a feature review and 1 hour training video.

I still miss the browse folders options, this way I do not have to always import photos into Catalogs or Collections just like we had on the Raw Shooter, maybe this will be available on the final version.

But so far I think they are making a tough product against the competition.

And I leave you with a great overview video from Terry White's Adobe Creative Suite Video Podcast that shows you all the cool new features of this version.

Just click on the image below to download the 32Mb video.

Adobe Lightroom 1.4 NOT Really Working

The Lightroom 1.4 update for Mac and Windows has been temporarily removed from the Adobe.com web site. Those Lightroom users who have installed Lightroom 1.4 should uninstall the update and install Lightroom 1.3.1.(Mac, Win) until a further update can be provided.

For those not in immediate need of the updated camera support available in Camera Raw 4.4 or the DNG 4.4 Converter, it's recommended that you also continue working with the 4.3.1 versions. (Mac, Win)

This decision is based on the following errors that have been discovered with the recent update:

* EXIF Time Stamp Error: There is an error in the EXIF time stamp update technology that causes Lightroom to believe that the files are out of sync with the correct time stamp as displayed in Lightroom. Any ensuing metadata update will attempt to incorrectly modify the EXIF time stamp in the original raw file itself. This is the only metadata field that Lightroom will write to an original proprietary raw file. This error will not impact the integrity of your image data. The Camera Raw plug-in also will incorrectly change the EXIF time stamp in files converted by the plug-in. The information written to the XMP sidecar files or XMP metadata in the converted files will remain correct.
* DNG Conversion Error(Windows Only): With the latest version of the Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 applications, Adobe has included technology to verify that the image data in a DNG file is unchanged from when it was originally converted to DNG. Unfortunately, when converting to DNG using Lightroom 1.4 on Windows, the application will write an incorrect verification tag to describe the image data. When Lightroom attempts to work with those files in the Develop module, the application reads that incorrect tag, believes that there is something wrong with the raw data and will present an error. Rest assured, there is nothing wrong with the integrity of your image data or metadata. For those that have already converted their files to DNG using Lightroom 1.4(Windows only) we recommend using the DNG 4.3.1 converter to convert the DNG files you’ve created with Lightroom 1.4.
* Olympus Conversion Error: There is an error in converting Olympus JPEG files to other formats in Lightroom 1.4 and the Camera Raw 4.4 plug-in.

To uninstall Lightroom 1.4 please see the instructions per your platform:
Mac: Delete the Lightroom application in the Application folder(Mac) and Delete the following file: Library/Receipts/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.pkg
Windows: Choose the Uninstall Lightroom 1.4 menu item from the Windows start menu.
The Add/Remove Program utility on Windows will also achieve the same result.

To replace the Camera Raw 4.4 plug-in with the 4.3.1 plug-in, follow the manual installation instructions provided on the download page linked above.

I will post additional updates to this blog as we have more information on the timing and scope of the future update.

---- Update ----

Tom Hogarty (Lightroom Product Manager) Comments on 1.4 Release

The entire Lightroom team is extremely sorry for any problems we've caused our loyal customers with the March 14th 1.4 update. In our eagerness to get new camera support into customers' hands as promptly as possible, we let some bugs slip past our testing that were frankly unacceptable.

Compared to other Adobe applications, we've taken a much more aggressive approach to releasing frequent new versions with new features, but it's clear we need to take a hard look at our release process to make sure that this aggressive approach doesn't sacrifice quality.

One thing that we may consider is continuing the community approach we've taken in the past by releasing betas of our updates, so that they can get the broadest testing possible before they are certified as final.

The timing for what will need to be a Lightroom 1.4.1 release has not been determined but updated information will be posted to this blog when available.

Adobe Lightroom updates to 1.4

Adobe has made available a new update for their Adobe Photoshop Lightroom product turning it into a version 1.4 with camera Raw update and some minor improvements.

Download for win Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.4 and Mac.

Changes in Lightroom 1.4:

• Fixed reading files from Nikon D100 camera, improved support for the camera Olympus E-3.
• Also, improvements in the Lightroom Export SDK - a tool for developers to create plug-ins for the export of Lightroom.
• The errors in the plug for downloading pictures to an FTP server.
• Added support cameras Canon 1Ds Mark III, Nikon D3, Nikon D300, Olympus E-3 and others
• Compatibility with legacy printer drivers on OS X 10.5 (Leopard) has been updated.
• Previous camera profiles identified in the Calibrate panel of the Develop module may have displayed poor results at extreme ends of the temperature and tint ranges. A new camera profile identified as Camera Raw 4.4 is now available and will be applied by default to all images without existing Camera Raw or Lightroom settings. The creation of new default profiles will also include the updated Camera Raw 4.4 profile. Images edited in Camera Raw or Lightroom with earlier profiles will retain the earlier profile value and visual appearance.
• In previous grayscale conversions the Color Noise setting was disabled and this could result in an image with excessive noise when grayscale channel mixing is applied (which is why I desaturated all of the colors to make a black & white). Both the tool and effect have been enabled in Lightroom 1.4 providing the ability to reduce noise in grayscale conversions. In order to return to the prior visual appearance, Color Noise reduction can be set to zero.

And while you are updating Adobe Lightroom please take the time to download the new version of Camera Raw 4.4 for your Adobe Photoshop CS3 only. This Raw update will not work with previous versions of Adobe Photoshop.

Here are the links for Win and Mac.

Support for the following cameras has been added in this update.

• Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi/EOS Kiss X2)
• Fujifilm S100FS
• Nikon D60
• Olympus SP-570 UZ
• Pentax K20D
• Pentax K200D
• Sony A200
• Sony A300
• Sony A350

Additional Notes for Camera Raw 4.4:
• Previous camera profiles identified in the Calibrate panel may have displayed poor results at extreme ends of the temperature and tint ranges. A new camera profile identified as Camera Raw 4.4 is now available and will be applied by default to all images currently without existing Camera Raw or Lightroom settings. The creation of new default settings will also include the updated Camera Raw 4.4 profile. Images edited in Camera Raw or Lightroom with earlier profiles will retain the earlier profile value and visual appearance.
• All version of Camera Raw 4 are unable to open files with dimensions greater than 10,000 pixels on one side.
• Lightroom and Camera Raw will be updated together to ensure raw format and settings compatibility.

My Gear: Walking Bag

All My Gear in 2 Bags
Another post of My Gear series.

This time I will bring you what I normally carry with me when I'm out walking or when going with my kids for a walk.

You never know what beautiful subjects you will find to photograph.

Normally, for regular photo assignments, I use the gear that you see on the above picture and you can see the details of all of it at My Gear - What's in the Bags? (Part 1) and My Gear - What you wanted to know but were afraid to ask (Part 2)

But today we will talk about my walking bag.

By this I mean it travels with me to wherever I go, and yes, also to restaurants and bathroom :)

As I said before you never know what you will get in those places.

Walking Gear_01

Here is the Kit inside the bags.

Walking Gear_02

Let's take a look inside the bags:

- Canon Powershot G9.
- Kata DP-415 camera bag.
- QuikPod and QuikPod small stand.
- 4 boxes with 4x 1,5v flash replacement batteries.
- 1 Canon Original NB-2L and 2 ioncell-plus replace for Canon NB-2L.
- Gadget Infinity Cactus PT-04 Receiver and Transmitter.
- 5x SD cards (2x Sandisk Extreme III 2Gb, 2x Transcend 2Gb and 1 Sandisk UltraII 1Gb).
- Canon 220Ex and carrying case.

All this will fit inside the Kata DP-415 bag except for the QuikPod and the Canon 220Ex flash that travels separately.
Walking Gear_03

Illumination is up to the Canon 220EX and the Gadget Infinity triggers.

Well it's not a good flash since it does not have a manual control for full Strobist flashing but at least would give you some great FULL off camera blasts and you can control the rest on the camera or even use a ND flash filter to soften a little.

Well I like it because it's very small and since it was hidden on one of my bags with no use at least I turn out a good thing that I kept it.

Advise: If you have an older flash never send it away just because it's old, if it's working and don't matter about the brand, you can always make it fire with some cheap remotes and for sure you will arrange some use for it even if it's just to light some dark corner.

Walking Gear_04

Well cards... I have some duper, duper, triple fast cards... but I use them on my other cameras so for the G9 you can find some inexpensive ones if you google around. Pay also attention not to buy fake ones.

I prefer using some brands that can give you a lifetime warranty even if they cost a little bit more.

I had an older Sandisks that stop working while giving me too much read errors. I contact Sandisk by email and received a quick reply saying "...send them over and we will replace them for new ones..."

What more do you need ?
Took me about a minute to pack them and send them to Sandisk USA and later on a 3 weeks period, on my returned snail mail, I got a unopened boxed with brand new ones.

Thank you Sandisk :)

Last but not least some DIY reflectors.

On the left I made one of a rectangular cardboard of an old box and glued on one side some inexpensive aluminum kitchen foil so it will cover it the round one I found it as base of one of Christmas cakes but I think this would be very easy o find since they make this as base for some round cakes.

Well the cake unfortunately is no longer with us and it was delicious :)

On the other side of the rectangular shaped one I glued 3 sheets of white paper so I can have a more flatted light and the round one is kinda white grayish look. But it also gives a soft light when needed.

Both of this sides are more soften for some macro stuff or even to reflect some sun light while taking some portrait shots.

Hope you have enjoyed this last tip and have yourself some inexpensive reflectors to carry around with you on some bag or pocket.

Today while doing some assignment shots I discovered some inexpensive reflective material that people use to warm them selfs on frozen days and I think you can get them for 1,00 euro or so, one side is silver the other is golden and they call them Thermal Sheet Covers.

Here in Luxembourg you can find them on local supermarkets.

Just grab one of these babies and carry along with you, if needed they can also keep you warm ;)

By the way, if you have one Canon Powershot G9, like me, you are a lucky guy and I'm sure you haven't dig out all the menus. There is one great feature available that most of you haven't use it for sure.

Just pay attention next Monday to the Tips article and you will find it out, unless of course you have been using it ;)

More on this next Monday, March 10th 2008.
